The sensitization session, organized by <strong>Ransford Adu Acheampong<\/strong>, RTI Officer for <strong>Okai Koi South Sub-Metro<\/strong>, was hosted at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ghanahighschools.com\/ghs_schools\/accra-wesley-girls-high\/\">Accra Wesley Girls Senior High School<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supporting the event were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Helen Quartey<\/strong>, RTI Officer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ama.gov.gh\/\">Accra Metropolitan Assembly<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sophia Akwaah Asiamah<\/strong>, RTI Officer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gtarcc.gov.gh\/\">Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>E.K. Attoh<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/informedghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/IMG-20250604-WA0030-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/informedghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/IMG-20250604-WA0030-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/informedghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/IMG-20250604-WA0030-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/informedghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/IMG-20250604-WA0030-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/informedghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/IMG-20250604-WA0030.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Purpose of the Visit &#8211; Right to Information (RTI) Sensitization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The team introduced the students to the concept and importance of RTI, explained how young citizens can access public information, and demonstrated how RTI empowers participation in democratic governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students showed <strong>high levels of interest and engagement<\/strong>. Most had <strong>never heard of the RTI Act<\/strong>, making this session not just informative, but essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student Reactions: \u201cWe\u2019ve Never Heard of Right to Information Before!\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the students confessed that they had <strong>never encountered the RTI Act before this session<\/strong>. For them, the idea of requesting official information from public offices was eye-opening. From questions about corruption to curiosity about school funding, students expressed a genuine interest in how they could use RTI to hold institutions accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some students asked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>\u201cCan students use RTI to ask about government scholarships?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cIs there a fee when requesting information?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cWhat happens if a government office refuses to answer your RTI request?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These questions led to meaningful discussions about transparency, responsibility, and youth voice in governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cWe didn\u2019t know anything about the Right to Information or that students could also even request information. That\u2019s why the team set out not only to educate the students but to empower them as <strong>active participants in Ghana\u2019s democracy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The engagement session covered the origins and importance of the RTI law, its practical application, and how it protects citizens&#8217; rights to access information held by public institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYou have a right to ask questions. The government works for you,\u201d emphasized Miss Helen Quartey.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Topics Covered:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding the RTI Act (Act 989)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why RTI matters to young people<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to file an RTI request<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The role of public information in building accountable institutions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Target Schools?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sensitizing students at the secondary school level is crucial for one main reason: <strong>they represent the future of participatory democracy<\/strong>. By learning their rights early, students develop a lifelong habit of <strong>seeking truth, asking questions, and demanding accountability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The session at Accra Wesley Girls SHS also revealed a concerning gap in the school curriculum\u2014a lack of dedicated content around RTI and civic rights. Many teachers in attendance expressed support for integrating RTI education into civic studies, social studies, or government lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The enthusiasm and curiosity from the students showed the <strong>urgent need to expand RTI education to schools<\/strong> across the country. Informing Ghana&#8217;s youth today prepares them to become informed leaders tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Road Ahead: Expanding the Movement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The RTI education campaign will continue to <strong>reach schools, youth centers, and communities<\/strong>. As more students become informed, the demand for transparency from local and national institutions is expected to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe believe that an informed student today becomes a responsible leader tomorrow,\u201d said Ransford, RTI Officer at Okai-Koi South Sub Metro.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This session adds to the growing momentum behind <strong>grassroots RTI awareness initiatives<\/strong>, which align with the national push for <strong>open governance and youth inclusion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion: Information is Power<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The event at Accra Wesley Girls SHS was not just a lecture\u2014it was a call to action.
